The mechanically made stockings came with the invention of the knitting machine which arrived to France in 1600. The first machines could only provide plain stockings but very soon, patterned, mottled, ribbed stockings or stockings with flower designs were manufactured. Under the Revolution, the color changed and only black stockings were to be worn.
The first nylon stockings were put on sale in the thirties in the USA. They had such a success that nylon became synonymous with stocking and that 64 millions of pairs were sold in one year throughout the country. The second World War put temporarily an end to the production of nylon stockings.
They reappeared at the end of the war and again were a massive success, causing incredible queues in front of the stores. Round 1950, the seamless stockings appeared, available in several colors and thinnesses. Nylon becoming less expensive, stockings became more affordable. Nylons declined in the sixties and the arrival of the miniskirt would make women wear rather tights.
